Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a basic level of first aid training that is designed for people who work in low-risk environments. It is suitable for people working in social care, as it covers the basic skills needed to provide first aid in the event of an emergency.
The EFAW course typically covers the following topics:
- The role of the first aider
- Assessing an incident
- Managing an unresponsive casualty
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Choking
- Wounds and bleeding
- Shock
- Minor injuries (such as sprains and strains)
The course usually takes one day to complete and is typically delivered by an approved training provider. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate which is valid for three years.
It’s worth noting that for those working in social care, the EFAW certificate is often a minimum requirement by the employer, but more advanced training such as first aid at work, paediatric first aid or defibrillation training may be required as well.
